Party Season and Diabetes
The festive season has a heavier focus on food, alcohol, and late nights than any other time of the year. For people with diabetes, this can be a difficult time to balance our health and still feel like we are joining in with the festivities. These are the tips we follow to look after ourselves during party season.
Festive Food
Enjoy your favourite festive treats but pace yourself with smaller portions and taking time to savour each bite. Having balanced meals planned in-between treat-focused ones will help keep your energy steady.
Alcohol Awareness
If you want to drink, alternate alcoholic drinks with water or soft drinks. Happily, the range of low-sugar and alcohol-free options in pubs and restaurants is greater than it used to be.
Stick to Routines
Between Christmas and New Years Eve routines don’t seem to exist, but it’s much easier to manage diabetes with one. Ask your family and friends to help maintain structure like regular mealtimes.
No Guilt Allowed
Managing diabetes can be difficult, so if you’re treating yourself, don’t beat yourself up about it afterwards. You’re allowed to enjoy yourself without pressure. Listen to your body and stay safe.
Pre and Post-party Planning
Ensure your medication supply will last so you’re not caught out by holiday opening times. Then plan a post-party recovery routine that focuses on nutritious food, movement, and a good sleep routine.
